Monsters Exist Author Expose - Christopher Powers - Bitten

The next story in the Monsters Exist expose is by Christopher Powers. In Bitten, A man goes on a safari and brings back more than expected. Let's get to the story behind this gruesome tale.

Bitten backstory
By: Christopher Powers

I’ve always been fascinated by the study of cryptozoology. People using their scientific knowledge to prove the existence of creatures which are roundly disputed by their peers must be a trying job, and yet they go about their work with pride and confidence. It shares some similarities to the writing process. We don’t know if our stories will prove successful, or even see the light of day, but we persevere because it’s our passion; we believe in what we’re doing. At least that’s how I like to think of it. And let’s be honest, it’s a cool job. Who wouldn’t want to travel the world, visiting beautiful forests, lakes and jungles, in the hopes of discovering a new species of animal? I know I would.

Wanting to highlight a cryptid that never receives the attention or love that it deserves, I sent my characters to the heart of the Congo Basin, a jungle so dense and so large you could drop the entire state of Alaska in there and still have acres of land to explore.

Lurking in the thick underbrush is said to live the J’ba Fofi, or Congolese Giant Spider--an arachnid so ginormous the locals initially believed it was a monkey running on all fours.

The number of recorded sightings for J’ba Fofi peaked in the 1930’s and 40’s, but to this day people still claim to see these magnificent spiders. Unfortunately, aside from the proven discoveries of several huge cobwebs, no physical evidence has ever come to light.

As someone who dislikes spiders but loves all things cryptid, I desperately hope the J’ba Fofi exists, or at least that it did exist at some point. I want people who read my story to research this wonderful beast and help give it the respect it deserves.

That, at least, is my hope.
